Vatika: Gardens of Healing & Harmony

Tucked away in the peaceful hills of Thano, Dehradun, Lekhak Gaon—the Writer’s Village—is a distinctive initiative that brings together creativity, culture, and nature. Created as a space for writers, thinkers, and creative minds, the village offers an environment where ideas can flourish while staying deeply connected to the natural world.

Adding to this unique experience are the Herbal Gardens (Vatikas), thoughtfully designed to bring together ecological awareness, spiritual traditions, and India’s rich botanical heritage. More than beautiful green spaces, these Vatikas serve as living reflections of ancient knowledge, encouraging visitors to discover the relationship between nature, wellness, culture, and traditional wisdom.

Gardens That Grow Meaning

Each Vatika is rooted in India’s timeless relationship with nature. From celestial influences to medicinal value, these gardens embody a holistic way of living, learning, and healing.

Sacred Plants Aligned to Planetary Energies

Navgraha Vatika

Located at the main entrance, this circular garden features nine sacred plants, each representing one of the Navgrahas (celestial bodies) in Vedic astrology. According to ancient Indian traditions, these plants are believed to help balance planetary influences and support well-being, harmony, and prosperity.

Each plant is thoughtfully positioned in a specific direction corresponding to its associated planet, creating a meaningful blend of spiritual tradition and natural design. Beyond its cultural significance, the Vatika also promotes environmental awareness by encouraging the protection, respect, and preservation of sacred trees and plants.

Sacred Plants Aligned to Planetary Energies

Nakshatra Vatika

This Vatika is inspired by the 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) of Hindu astrology, with each Nakshatra represented by its associated sacred tree. Traditionally, these trees are believed to influence human well-being, emotional harmony, and spiritual energy.

Set beside a tranquil bridge and a clear-flowing stream, the garden creates a peaceful environment for learning, reflection, and reconnecting with nature. Planting and nurturing your Nakshatra tree is traditionally associated with prosperity, balance, and harmony.

Examples of Nakshatra Trees:
Amla, Peepal, Banyan, Kadamba, Neem, Jamun, Bel, Arjun, Baansa, Sheesham, and more.

24 Trees Honoring 24 Tirthankaras

Jain Tirthankar Vatika

Designed in a circular layout around a Dhyan Kendra (meditation center), this Vatika represents the spiritual journey and enlightenment of the 24 Tirthankaras of Jainism. Each tree is traditionally associated with the sacred tree under which a Tirthankara attained moksha.

The garden reflects the core Jain values of non-violence, compassion, simplicity, and spiritual reflection, creating a serene environment for contemplation and inner peace. It offers visitors a meaningful opportunity to connect with nature while exploring Jain spiritual traditions.

Tirthankar Trees Include:
Vat, Saptaparna, Saagwan, Shirisha, Priyangu, Kadamba, Devdaru, Champaka, Peepal, Amra, Tilak, and more.

A Living Archive of Medicinal Wisdom

Sanjeevani Vatika

Inspired by the legendary herb mentioned in the Ramayana, the Sanjeevani Vatika is home to more than 150 species of medicinal plants, each carefully nurtured, identified, and labeled for visitors. The garden also features a musical irrigation system and thoughtfully designed spaces that create a unique blend of nature, art, and learning.

The Vatika aims to spread awareness about the traditional importance of medicinal herbs, especially among children and young visitors. It offers an engaging way to understand how plants have been valued in traditional healing practices and natural wellness. During the rainy season, the garden comes alive with lush greenery, fresh foliage, and vibrant blooms.

Featured Medicinal Plants:
Aparajita, Giloy, Shatavari, Krishna Vasa, Arjun, Kumari, Bilva, Parijat, Putrajeevak, Kaner, Imli, Kadamba, and many more.
